What is the Dukan Diet? The Dukan Diet is built upon four separate phases. The types of foods you can eat depend on which phase of the diet you are in. Each stage of the diet contains a list of unlimited foods that can be eaten as much as you’d like. The four phases are:
- The Attack Phase. This phase consists of two to ten days of nothing but pure protein foods. Dr. Dukan lays out 72 allowed foods that can be eaten in unlimited quantities. The length of the phase depends on how much weight you have to lose, whether or not you have dieted recently, and a few other factors. You can use the calculator on Dr. Dukan’s official site to determine the proper amount of time to spend on this phase. The purpose of the Attack Phase is to obtain quick results to keep you motivated and to teach your body and mind new eating habits.
- The Cruise Phase. This phase continues until you reach your goal weight. In this phase, you alternate days of eating pure protein with days of eating protein and vegetables. Only non-starchy vegetables are allowed on this phase of the diet. This phase is meant to provide steady, slow weight loss.
- The Consolidation Phase. This phase lasts five days for every pound lost and is meant to help your body adapt to its new weight without allowing you to binge and gain the weight back. During this phase, fruits and grains are reintroduced in small quantities, and you are allowed two “celebration” meals per week without any restrictions.
- The Stabilization Phase. In this phase, you return to a normal style of eating! However, you will still need to avoid bingeing and adhere to one pure protein day per week.
